The History of Pietrelcina

Pietrelcina is a small country in a heart of Sannium at about 10 km from Benevento.
The origins of Pietrelcina are very ancient, infact the discovery of ruins testifies that Pietrelcina was lived just in remote times.
During the years Pietrelcina has endured a lots of catastrophes: in the 1456 an earthquake destroyed a Byzantine church; in 1656 the plague caused about 700 victims, in 1688 another earthquake destroyed a convent of the four hundred and the S. Mary’s Church, today called S. Anna’s Church.
The Arcibishop of Pietrelcina was Vincenzo Maria Orsini who became Pope with name Benedetto XIII.
In 1764 at Pietrelcina there was a scarcity and in 1854 a devastating epidemic of cholera from which Pietrelcina was freed thanks to a miracle of Madonna della Libera, Patron Saint of Pietrelcina.
Pietrelcina had an agricultural economy, to testify this are the houses which have two plans: the flat earth in the past was a stable.
Pietrelcina rises on the mountain spur called Morgia and thank to its position is an evocative and characteristic country.
